What the Distillery Says

Ardbeg Corryvreckan takes its name from the famous whirlpool that lies to the north of Islay, where only the bravest souls dare to venture. Swirling aromas and torrents of deep, peaty, peppery taste lurk beneath the surface of this beautifully balanced dram. Like the whirlpool itself, Corryvreckan is not for the faint-hearted! Awarded The World’s Best Single Malt in 2010 by the World Whiskies Awards.

Non chill-filtered at 57.1% ABV

TASTING NOTES
COLOR: Rich Amber
AROMA: Heady, intense and powerful. Swirl the glass and dip your nose into the torrents of tarry ropes, creosote and linseed oil rising from deep within the vortex. A collision of waxy dark chocolate, warm blackcurrants and muscovado sugar pulls you under its spell with a burst of plump cherries and earthy pine needles leaping from its depths. From salty seasoning comes a briny character with tangy crisp seaweed and smoky bacon swirling on the surface with hints of sweet vanilla, spicy cloves and blueberries. Surrender to its dangerous depths with the heady force of menthol, treacle and chilli sauce.
TASTE: Plunge into the whirlpool and torrents of taste well up on the palate; deep, peppery and chewy, bombarding the tongue. The first plunge brings forth chewy peppered steak soaked in pepper sauce with the tang of crispy seaweed. As you descend deeper, encounter a mouthful of black tarry espresso coffee that coats the palate with rich melted dark fruits (blackcurrants, blueberries and cherries) and bitter almonds. As the taste soaks in deeper, star anise and hickory dry out the palate before a surprise of chalky effervescent violets fizz to the surface.
FINISH: Long, deep and remaining powerful into the finish with black tarry coffee, chocolate coated cherries and hot pepper sauce, the lingering memories of your mysterious and daring journey into Corryvreckan.

What Gary Says

Nose:  Rich and intense peat smoke, salted sea weed, leather, barbecue pulled pork, ashy, some fruit notes underneath, medicinal, a hint of sardines.
Palate:  Smoky peat and dark chocolate, white cracked pepper, vanilla, honey, soft fruit notes of pears and peaches.
Finish:  Moderately long with peat smoke and a touch of honey.
Comments:  Some folks might knock the fact that this is non-age stated (meaning it could include young single malt).  While I would applaud transparency, what I care most about is what the whisk(e)y delivers.  This is a lovely, intense dram – easily one of my favorite Ardbegs.  Nothing about it is objectionable, or even disappointing to be honest.  It isn’t just that at the high proof it brings an amazing intensity (which it does), but it has layers of complexity that I really enjoy.  Very fitting name, as I nose this I feel I’m being slowly pulled into the dram, with something new unveiled if I’m patient.  A stellar pour of peaty, briny goodness!.

Hochstadter’s Family Reserve 16 Year Straight Rye Whiskey

What the Producer Says

Hochstadter’s Family Reserve 16 Year Straight Rye Whiskey is a cask strength limited release created for the most discerning connoisseurs and collectors. The first ultra-premium offering in the Hochstadter’s portfolio, it is unfiltered, undiluted and full-flavored at 123.8 proof, delivering an intense explosion of robust rye flavor.

Made from 100 percent farm-grown rye grain and aged 16 years in newly charred American Oak Barrels, this rare and bold offering is sourced from Alberta Distillers Limited and bottled at cask strength in Philadelphia, PA. The end result is unfiltered, undiluted and full-flavored, delivering an intense explosion of robust rye flavor.

What Gary Says

Nose:  Lovely! Oak with tobacco, baking spices – clove, soft cinnamon and a bit of anise, toffee, dried mint, cherries, nutmeg, toasted orange zest, sandalwood, notes of pine, lemongrass, and walnuts.
Palate:  Warm baking spices of clove, cinnamon, citrus zip, vanilla, oak, bit of ginger, mint; some water thickens the mouthfeel and brings out more mint, vanilla, and cherries.
Finish:  Long, drying with fruit, pepper, and herbal spices.
Comments:  This is a phenomenal, well aged rye. I’ve been blessed to have enjoyed some unicorn ryes (Black Maple Hill 18yr old, Doug’s Green Ink 22yr Willet), and I’m not saying that this is exactly like those – but it definitely reminded me that sort of experience. 16 years is a long time in new oak for a whiskey. I tend to not prefer bourbon or rye that old, as it has just too much oak in many cases. This isn’t too oaky, and has a lovely balance of the sweetness with some herbal, almost savory spice notes. The $200 price tag is the only thing that keeps this from a solid ‘Must Buy’ in my book, although after tasting this sample – I absolutely am going to buy a bottle.

Longrow 18 Year

Longrow 18 Year
Peated Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky

$180 – $200

Longrow 18 year old

What the Distillery Says

Dark and slightly mysterious, our 18-year-old Longrow has a complex nose that unearths a peaty aroma reminiscent of dunnage warehouses.

Nose: A complex nose: Sweet fruits, citrus, peaches and orange zest at first before a gentle earthy peaty aroma reveals itself.
Palate: Rich and very, very tasty. Well balanced. Dark chocolate, creamy coffee and gingerbread to the fore, followed by rhubarb and vanilla custard.
Finish: Long and sweet, a hint of typical Longrow peat smoke combined with more chocolate and some dried fruits.

What Gary Says

Nose:  Thick, rich sherry, barbecue brisket, subtle peat, plums, poached pears, orange, vanilla, worn leather, oak, pipe tobacco smoke.
Palate:  Creamy mouthfeel with vanilla cream, grilled peaches, peat, sherry, cocoa, walnuts, pepper and allspice.
Finish:  Long with a nutty note of plums and peat smoke.
Comments:  A really lovely dram! Beautifully balanced with peat, fruit, smoke and a bit of spice. Reading their tasting notes and taking another sip – I do get coffee with a fair dose of cream now. This is a limited bottling, so a price of $200 isn’t unreasonable. Sure, there are some whiskies for less dough that I like as well (maybe even better), but not many. For a single malt, this has the complexity and balance of the better blends (if tasting blind, I would have wondered if maybe this was a Compass Box offering without any Clynelish in the mix). Thanks to Paul for the sample of this really delightful dram!

The Balvenie Tun 1509 batch 5

What the Distillery Says*

For the 2018 release, The Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 5, David C Stewart MBE carefully selected 29 casks – 10 traditional American oak barrels, 8 sherry butts, 8 sherry hogsheads, and 3 refill American oak hogsheads – from the distillery’s precious aged stocks. All were transferred to Tun 1509, which sits in Warehouse 24, for several months before bottling. Tun is a rare interpretation of the marrying process and allows our most mature casks of various vintages to come together to create a unique expression of The Balvenie that is greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

Tasting Notes – Rich and intensely fruity on the nose. A spicy outburst on the palate, then sweetened with a deep sherry character. Lingering and luscious with dried fruit and elegant oaky notes on the finish.

* Technically, the above is what I gleaned from the bottle itself or other sources. Strangely enough, if you visit The Balvenie’s web-site, it includes a page for every Tun 1509 batch . . . except this one.

What Gary Says

Nose:  Rich and thick, chocolate, toffee, blood orange, berries, loads of soft spice with ginger, cardamon, figs, dates, honey, leather, pipe tobacco, oak, and an earthiness with loads of complexity.
Palate:  Creamy mouthfeel, treacle with cinnamon icing, cocoa, berries in cream, dark fruits with some orange thrown in, roasted walnuts, oak, hints of ginger and clove.
Finish:  Long with spiced dark fruit, dark chocolate, and drying with spices.
Comments:  This is f@#$king lovely. A truly complex dram, perfect for sipping and pondering. An expensive bottle for sure (and a big thanks to Richard for the generous sample!), and with that the question always comes up as to “Is it worth it?” Nearly impossible to answer, as value and enjoyment are such individual concepts. The price isn’t unreasonable, but I’ll admit that does hold me back from giving this a solid ‘Must Buy’.  I will tell you that tasting this was absolutely an experience. It is well crafted and incredibly nuanced. I haven’t had any of the other batches to compare, but if you’ve got the means and are a fan of The Balvenie’s lineup, I’d definitely seek an opportunity to at least try it for yourself. That’s the only way to determine if it is “worth it”.

Balvenie Single Barrel Sherry Cask

What the Distillery Says

The Balvenie Single Barrel Sherry Cask has been matured exclusively in a single European oak sherry butt for at least 15 years. The term ‘Single Barrel’ conveys the unique nature of the single malt whisky, which has been drawn from a single cask of a single distillation.
Limited by nature, each heavily toasted European oak Oloroso sherry butt will yield no more than 800 bottles of Scotch whisky.

TASTING NOTES
NOSE: Dried fruits overlaid with a gentle nuttiness
TASTE: Rich with elegant oak and subtle spice
FINISH: Long, sherried finish

What Gary Says

Nose:  Thick sherry, balsamic vinegar over spongecake with dark fruit, walnuts, almonds, floral notes with subtle smoke and oak; water brings out more orchard fruit notes.
Palate:  Rich mouthfeel, fruitcake with sherry, cinnamon, nutmeg, subtle clove, oak.
Finish:  Moderately long, drying with notes of dark fruit.
Comments:  This has some very intense flavor for a sub 50% ABV dram. In fact, the first time I had tried this at a friend’s house, I expected it was cask strength – not that it drinks hot (it doesn’t) but just the flavor intensity. It takes water well, and maintains a great mouthfeel. I picked this up in early 2020 for $115, and felt that was a bargain for a 15 year single malt of this quality. As a single barrel, I don’t know how much variation there is. This is the first I’ve owned, and I think I’ve only sampled from two others – and thought all three of those were really delicious.
