The Recipe:
OESQ is currently only available as a private selection bottling at the distillery gift shop or possibly at a local liquor store near you. This particular bottle was a Wine Palace in Livonia selection, purchased in December 2014.

Unlocking the recipe codes goes like this…

“O” starts all of Four Roses’ recipes and only means that it is made by Four Roses in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.

“E” mean that this is the lower rye content of the two mashbills that Four Roses uses, specifically 75% Corn, 20% Rye, and 5% Malted Barley

“S” means that it is Straight Whiskey by U.S. Regulatory definition, again all their products carry this designation

“Q” distinguishes the yeast strain used. This specific one impacts more of a floral character onto the distillate

What Gary Says:

Nose: Floral fabric softner, fruitcake, rice pudding over oak.
Palate: A warm sherry sweetness gives way to hot cinnamon candy; some notes of pecans and chocolate.
Finish: Moderately long and drying, with a pepper spice bite at the end.
Comments: The ‘Q’ yeast was one of the harder ones for me to find, and has always been hit or miss for me. Every ‘Q’ selection I’ve tried had unmistakenable floral characteristics, and this one is no exception. I really like this particular bottle. I don’t often get sherry sweetness in bourbon, so that makes it uniquely interesting.

OESK is currently only available as a private selection bottling at the distillery gift shop or possibly at a local liquor store near you. This particular bottle was a Liquor Barn selection, bottled 8/12/2013.

“O” starts all of Four Roses’ recipes and only means that it is made by Four Roses in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.

What Gary Says:

Nose: Vanilla, caramel, cinnamon dusted creme brluee, oak, cigar paper and sublte hints of fruit salad; a tad hot/harsh neat.
Palate: Warm sweetness that sharpens quickly, tart cherries  on vanilla wafers with cinnamon and honey, a spicy pepper bite at the end.
Finish: Moderately long with trailing pepper spice.
Comments: This bourbon definitely improves with water. The nose still has oak, but the cinnamon is tamped down and I get an interesting malted milkball note. This bottle is a solid representative of the K yeast. Personally I prefer the OB mashbill over the OE mashbill (more rye, less corn), but there isn’t anything objectionable about this pour. I bought this bottle as part of my quest to own one bottle of all 10 possible recipes, and I’m glad I did that. With any single barrel, there will be a some variation – although this is the only OESK I’ve ever owned. I’ve had several OBSO and OBSV picks over the years, and while the recipe does stands out – some are better than others.

What the Bottler Says
The Cadenhead’s 1842 Live Casks contain two or more single malts from the region they represent. Visitors to the store can buy bottles of various sizes. The casks and contents are changes periodically, so if you like a particular pour, best to buy when you can!

What Gary Says
Nose:  Sea air, brine, peat, iodine with pepper spice.
Palate:  Earthy peat with hints of honey, pepper spice bite at the end.
Finish:  Moderate in length, drying and peppery.
Comments:  I bought this while visiting their London store in May 2016. It is a solid representation of Islay with big peat and sea air. Some water definitely helps bring it into a better balance, allowing more of the honeyed sweetness to cut through. I was really intrigued by this concept of “live casks” where they bottle right there in front of you (and, I couldn’t find anything else in stock and refused to leave empty handed!) Glad I did – very enjoyable pour.

What the Distiller Says
Matured in a combination of the finest Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks for a minimum of 21 years, the ‘Parliament’ continues the great GlenDronach tradition of offering fruit-laden intensity in its single malts. This rich expression has been named ‘Parliament’ after the colony, or ‘parliament’, of rooks that have been nesting in the trees that overlook the GlenDronach distillery for almost 200 years. Bottled at 48%, the ‘Parliament’ is non chill filtered and of natural colour.

TASTING NOTES
APPEARANCE: Deep amber with a cherry wood sheen.
NOSE: A delicate mix of ripe autumnal fruits – notably blackberries and red plums. Rich Oloroso sherry and candied orange segments. Spiced oatmeal biscuits and toasted oak fragrances bring excellent weight and balance.
PALATE: Resolute flavours of fine Oloroso sherry and bitter chocolate sauce, which has been spread liberally over homemade plum pudding. This is all infused with fabulous spicy notes – cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Full bodied with smooth tannins.
CONCLUSION: Long and lingering.

What Gary Says
Nose:  Thick sherry, fruitcake soaked in alcohol, orange marmalade with cloves, allspice, hints of toffee and leather w/ lingering vanilla pipe smoke.
Palate:  Sweet with chocolate, citrus, currants, raisins; balanced nicely with allspice and nutmeg over oak.
Finish:  Long and lingering w/ a bit of tannic smoke as it trails off.
Comments:  A sherry bomb to be sure, but delicious (if you like that sorta thing). This was the first 21 yr old single malt I ever purchased (in large part because it was only $130 back in 2017, which was a steal). A very nicely balanced dram, with a bit more spice and oak to go with all that dark fruit sweetness. While delicious, if offered a free pour of this or the 15 yr Revival – I think I’d go with the 15 yr.

The GlenDronach 18 years old has been named after the renowned founder of the distillery, James Allardice. This exceptional sherried single malt is non chill filtered and of natural colour. Matured in the finest Spanish Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 46%, this sublime richly sherried malt is truly unforgettable.

TASTING NOTES
APPEARANCE: Bright deep gold with a tawny centre.
NOSE: Sweet aromatics of fudge and Muscovado sugar. Fruit compote and glacier morello cherries provide added complexity.
PALATE: Rich dark and seductive. Remarkable flavours of stewed fruits and all-spice marry together with classic aged Oloroso sherry and toasted walnut bread combined with chocolate orange.
CONCLUSION: Tremendously complex and long.

What Gary Says
Nose:  Sherried fruit with cloves, musty oak, and leather with hints of smoke.
Palate:  Sweet and soft upon entry, chocolate orange that gradually builds in pepper spice.
Finish:  Moderate in length and drying.
Comments:  This is lighter in color than the 15 yr Revival, and also less intense in the sherry sweetness with a bit more of a spice edge. I get more citrus notes here rather than the dark fruits I often associate with sherry. Nothing objectionable to me; a lovely dram, but after tasting the 15yr Revival, I was a bit underwhelmed by comparison.
