What the Producer Says

— First-ever Double Bonded Rye, blending two Bottled-in-Bond ryes from MGP and Bardstown Bourbon Co.
— Label features The Darts, an all female band that has a raw garage-punk energy with a dark, hypnotic groove — think fuzzed-out organs, thundering drums, and fearless vocals.
— This blend of ryes is as unique as the hot pink label in the sea of green ones on the shelf.
— Photo by Ed Arnaud captures the chaos and swagger of the punk ethos.
— Gold Medal winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition
— Aged 4–7 years; mash bill: 86% rye, 9% corn, 5% malted barley
Tasting Notes
Color: Clear amber color
Nose: Balanced nut and spice characters
Palate: Balanced spice and oak
Finish: Cooling menthol with spice and oak

What Gary Says

Nose: Rye spice with mint, cinnamon, lemon and tangerine zest with a hint of clove.
Palate: Sharp, warm and spicy with chocolate, cinnamon, cloves, honey and pepper spice.
Finish: Short to moderate in length with cinnamon, mint and caramel.
Comments: None of that ‘barely-legal rye’; that high-rye mashbill definitely comes across loud and clear, and fitting with what they’re going for. This one is also better with a bit of water, which brings out a note of grapefruit on the nose. I like the idea of blending products from different distilleries; looking for something unique that might even be greater than the sum of it’s parts. While there wasn’t anything off-putting to me, this didn’t quite achieve that (although a perfectly serviceable rye, especially if you’re looking for a high-rye rye).

Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Cornerstone Rye

What the Distillery Says

Master’s Keep Cornerstone is the fourth release in the limited edition Master’s Keep series, and was the oldest rye whiskey ever released by Wild Turkey prior Master’s Keep Triumph’s release in 2024. For this one-of-a-kind Limited Edition, Eddie Russell hand-picked and set aside a secret lot of his oldest and boldest rye whiskey barrels, all aged from 9 to 11 years, then leveraged his nearly four decades of experience to create a perfectly balanced spirit that showed off just what an American rye whiskey could be. Aromas of vanilla, black pepper, and toasted rye give way to cascading flavors of honey and baked apple before a long and lingering finish of spice and oak.

TASTE: Cascading flavors of honey and baked apple
AROMA: Warm vanilla, black pepper, and toasted rye
FINISH: Remarkably crisp and clean, with long and lingering flavors of spice and oak
PROCESS: 109 proof aged 9-11 years

What Gary Says

Nose:  Citrus zest, dill, mint, charred oak, honey, pepper and a bit of cedar.
Palate:  Green apple sour candy, cinnamon, caramel and honey.
Finish:  Moderate in length, drying with apples and rye spice.
Comments:  This is a very apple heavy dram (which apples aren’t an unusual tasting note, but with rye it is a bit different). Solid whiskey, although takes some work to coax the complexity from it, and that shines through for me more on the nose than on the palate.

What the Distillery Says

MINDEN, NV (July 21, 2025) – Minden Mill Distilling announces the nationwide release of its Single Estate Nevada Straight Rye Whiskey – a flavorful expression that aims to take American rye in a new direction with a focus on balance over spice. A true representation of Nevada’s high desert terroir, the 94-proof, non-chill filtered four-year-old whiskey is crafted with grains harvested from local fields carefully cultivated and overseen by Minden Mill, and distilled at the state-of-the-art estate distillery, which was recently named Nevada Distillery of the Year by the New York International Spirits Competition.

Master Distiller Joe O’Sullivan produces Minden Mill Nevada Straight Rye Whiskey using a distinctive mash bill of 80% rye, 10% soft white wheat and 10% estate-malted barley. Minden Mill’s Rye reflects the high-desert environment—where dramatic temperature swings and a tight 90-day growing season deliver a rye with an earthy, nutty flavor profile and natural depth. The distillate is cut with snowmelt-fed water sourced from the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe.

As a member of the Estate Whiskey Alliance and a licensed Nevada Estate Distillery, Minden Mill is among a select few U.S. distilleries committed to full grain traceability and oversight at every stage of production that happens on its 1,200-acre estate. The distillery exceeds both the Nevada state and Estate Whiskey Alliance standards by sourcing 100% of the grains from within five miles of the distillery from land under Minden Mill’s control. With every step—milling, fermentation, distillation, maturation, and bottling—taking place on-site, the distillery is an innovator in expressing American whiskey terroir, particularly in the often-overlooked rye category.

“Very few producers own the full process from grain to glass, and that’s where Minden Mill Rye starts to stand apart. We don’t just distill the whiskey – we grow it,” says Master Distiller O’Sullivan. “Unlike most rye whiskeys, you won’t find any spice bombs here. It’s far more savory and balanced than most people expect. This mash bill was designed to highlight the candied orange peel character that is our house style.”

Minden Mill Nevada Straight Rye is distilled through a combination of a single Headframe continuous stripping still and a state-of-the-art Christian CARL hybrid still, both housed in a former 100+ year-old creamery onsite. The whiskey is aged in Seguin Moreau New American oak barrels with a #3 char in traditional wooden rickhouses calibrated to mimic the temperature and humidity of Kentucky’s Nelson County, ensuring a consistent, gradual maturation. The result is a rye whiskey that balances bold oak influence with mature complexity.

Tasting Notes:
Minden Mill Nevada Straight Rye Whiskey offers aromas of bright orange peel and toasted spice, dancing with warm vanilla. On the palate, succulent cherry syrup and crème brûlée enter the conversation, mingling with orange zest, baking spices and soft, subdued oak. The finish is long and lingering, replete with candied fruit, warm graham cracker, and a pleasant minerality balanced by spice and sweetness.

Minden Mill Nevada Straight Rye Whiskey is available nationally with an SRP of $45 and online at mindenmill.com. The Minden Mill single estate whiskey portfolio also includes an American Single Malt Whiskey and a Nevada Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

What Gary Says

Nose:  Fruity with sour apple candies, grapefruit, charred oak, mint, honey, anise and cinnamon.
Palate:  Thick mouthfeel with grapefruit, honey, black cherry, vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, mint and oak.
Finish:  Moderately long with anise, apple and pepper spice.
Comments:  A damned nice rye, with a spiciness and bite that don’t leave you wondering about if this is one of those ‘barely legal ryes’ with 51% rye. I’m not usually a grapefruit fan, but don’t mind it in this. Appreciate the non-chill filtering, which shows up in the mouthfeel. This is one that I wouldn’t add any water to – neat from the bottle as the distiller intended, it shines quite well at 47% (although I did find a few drops of water amps the honey and caramel notes on the nose, thins out that lovely thick mouthfeel a bit and brings the cherry notes forward on the palate). Also appreciate that they were very responsive to questions (clarifying that they use French Oak barrel heads on their 53 gallon casks which might bring a little more spice to the party). This is my first experience with Minden Mill, and it’s a strong start.

Woodinville 8 Year Old Limited Edition Straight Rye Whiskey
We would like to thank Woodinville Whiskey for sending us a sample to review.

What the Distillery Says

Woodinville 100% Rye Aged 8 Years. This is truly handcrafted whiskey. Planted in the Fall, rye grain lies dormant all winter long under a blanket of snow. When growth resumes, during the scorching summer months on the Omlin family farm in Quincy, Washington, the crop is hand irrigated. Nearly a full year after planting, at harvest, Arnie and son, Joel work long hours gathering the grain, which is then trucked across the mountains to Woodinville for milling, mashing and distillation. After distillation, the whiskey is transported back to barrelhouses in Quincy, where it rests in custom-specified, long-seasoned, toasted and charred American Oak barrels.

“None of this is efficient, but it’s 100% worth it,” say Woodinville co-founder Orlin Sorensen. “We are laser-focused on quality, and if it takes an extra step or two on the journey, we’ll absolutely forge that path. We’re here to make the best craft whiskey in America, and we’re excited to share this Woodinville 100% Rye Aged 8 Years.”

Woodinville 100% Rye Aged 8 Years Tasting Notes: Dark molasses, clove and brown sugar on the nose, followed by cinnamon, vanilla, dark honey and touch of dried cranberry on the palate. It offers a long warm peppery finish with a dry oaky grip in your mouth.

What Gary Says

Nose: Rich and spicy with cloves, brown sugar, figs, red berries, oak and a hint of cola.
Palate: Red berries (raspberry and cranberry), cinnamon, cloves, honey, orange with a hint of lime.
Finish: Moderate in length with oak, citrus and pepper spice.
Comments: The color on this is insanely dark for only 8 years old and 50% ABV; this looks like it is either much older and higher proof. It definitely punches above its weight. The age shows, not just in the wood influence but in how the flavors knit together. The rye spice is present, and that cola and lime note were unexpected. While not reinventing the category, it’s a damn good representation, and a must try for rye fans out there. I’d try it neat, as it sings at that proof and doesn’t need any water.

What the Producer Says

Legend has it, the only way to catch a glimpse of the cunning and elusive jackalope is to enjoy a glass of a truly incredible whiskey. That’s why we made Bourye®, a cross between bourbon whiskey and rye whiskey (Bourbon + Rye = Bourye) that—like the jackalope itself—is unique, mysterious, and gone in a flash. All whiskeys in this carefully crafted, limited-release blend are a minimum of ten years old. Overflowing with rich flavors of orange crème anglaise drizzled over dark chocolate ginger cake, with notes of espresso on the finish, Bourye® is sure to attract even the most discerning of jackalopes.

All whiskeys in this carefully crafted blend are a minimum of 10 years old and sourced from multiple distilleries. See highwest.com for technical details and sourcing, that’s not a secret. However, the proportions are! Bourye® is best enjoyed around a campfire while looking at the Milky Way.

Mash bill Details
Straight Rye Whiskey: 95% rye, 5% barley malt from MGP; 80% rye, 20% malted rye from HWD
Straight Bourbon Whiskey: 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley malt from MGP; 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley from MGP; 78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley from KY

Taste: Maple glazed doughnut, salted crème brûlée, candied orange peel, chicory, English breakfast tea, ginger chews, seasoned oak
Finish: Fresh yellow nectarines with a softly building rye spice
Bourye® is best enjoyed around a campfire while looking at the Milky Way. Sip straight or with a little water. Not recommended with ice.

What Gary Says

Nose: Baked apple crisp, vanilla, oak, cedar, hint of maple syrup, chocolate, almonds and blood orange zest.
Palate: Salted caramel, chocolate orange, toffee, ginger snap cookies, cinnamon with a bit of oak.
Finish: Moderate in length with peaches, caramel and rye spice.
Comments: I’ve been a long-time fan of High West Bourye since I first reviewed it almost 9 years ago to the day.  Sadly I don’t have any from that far back, when I did happen to have bottles from 2024 and 2017 that I pulled out for comparison purposes. Insanely similar to last year’s batch, and pretty darn similar to 2017.  All that said – this is a really nice whiskey, giving you the best of the sweetness of bourbon with some spice from the rye.  You may wonder – is this different from simply a ‘high-rye bourbon’?  Short answer – yes.  It has some pretty high-rye bourbon in the mashbill (or blend-bill?) but it definitely has different characteristics.  And whiskey enthusiasts are well aware that even IDENTICAL mashbills can produce very different whiskies based on where they age and for how long. This is very well balanced pour, and while I’ve never enjoyed it around a campfire – it was delightful in the comfort of my own home!
