AROMA: A BALANCE OF SWEET FRUIT AND RYE SPICE COMPLEMENTED WITH SLIGHT HINTS OF MINT.
PALATE: FORWARD NOTES OF CARAMEL, VANILLA AND FRUIT, WITH A BOLD RYE SPICE FINISH.
FLAVORS: FRUIT, RYE SPICE, SLIGHT MINT, CARAMEL & VANILLA
MASH BILL: 51% RYE | 45% CORN | 4% BARLEY MALT
What Gary Says
Nose: Fresh and bright, caramel, dill, lemongrass, mint, bit of cedar and a note of corn flakes.
Palate: Round mouthfeel, toffee, mint, subtle citrus, cinnamon and a hint of pear.
Finish: Short to moderate in length with mint, caramel and pepper.
Comments: A very pleasant, although gentle rye. I’ve long been a fan of MGP’s 95% rye mash bill, and this ‘barely legal’ rye is quite a bit different. I’m glad that Luxco/Ross & Squibb are releasing different mash bills, as I know some folks who find rye “too spicy/too biting”, but likely would find this delightful. This is a nice sipper. I am not a fan of the dark glass bottle though (seriously, shining an LED flashlight behind the bottle to see how full it is – nothing). I think that is probably part of the branding, but from a practical perspective – I like to know how much whiskey I’ve got left in the bottle when sitting on the shelf.
My trick when I can’t see how full a bottle is from the outside: with the cap off, look down into it to see the liquid level, and since it’s dark inside the bottle you can see where your fingertip is touching it on the outside. Move your finger to where the liquid level is and make a mark on the label, or put a piece of tape there, so you can see it on the shelf. No flashlight needed. But I haven’t tried it on a dark whisk(e)y bottle, so I’m not sure it will work for Alias Straight Rye.
But I see your point: we shouldn’t have to do this.

Thanks for sharing Martin (and alerting me to the fact that the ‘Privacy Policy’ link when making a comment was broken! Just fixed that!) I’ll have to see if I still have this bottle to test if your recommend would work on it; I’ve seen bottles that are a darker glass that makes it ‘difficult’ to tell, but if I recall – this one was damn near impossible. I don’t mind a challenge with some things – but this isn’t one of them 🙂
