Event Notice: Lunch with Jim Rutledge

Listen up all you bourbon drinkers, junkies, and geeks! What are you doing for lunch next Wednesday, March 14th at 1PM? You could be having lunch with Jim Rutledge, Master Distiller for Four Roses. Yes, the man behind the 10 recipes of fantastic Four Roses Bourbon will be at a private lunch event hosted by 5 Napkin Burger here in Atlanta. We will dine on a menu provided by 5 Napkin Burger and drink Four Roses Bourbons. Mr. Rutledge is also bringing along an advance taste of the 2012 Limited Edition Single Barrel well before release to the general public. This is a private event with plenty of opportunity for questions and general discussion with Mr. Rutledge. The folks behind 5 Napkin Burger were kind enough to not only invite me but also offer up an additional couple of spots to a Whisk(e)y Apostle reader.

If you would like to go then all you have to do is tell me why you want to attend. You can email me, post a comment to this entry, or respond on Twitter @WhiskeyApostle. I’ll choose the best response next Monday and see you and a guest at the lunch on Wednesday. It’s that simple. So let me hear why you want to go!

Drink wisely my friends,

Holiday Swag Giveaway

Who wants some free stuff? Oh you know you do. Unfortunately, I don’t have anything as cool as the Chivas Bar set that we gave away last year but we do have some Wild Turkey snifter glasses, clothing, and maybe a few other things from the Whisk(e)y Apostle treasure trove. Here’s all you have to do…

1. Be a registered Whisk(e)y Apostle member, which you can do over here.
2. Be registered with a valid email address (we promise not to spam you)
3. Be in the continental United States (sorry but I’m footing the bill for shipping)
4. Have a first name listed on the registration.

That last one is just to make sure you’re an actual person. Weird things happen when you run a website. 😉 That’s it.

The contest is open through January 1st. We’ll pick members at random, contact the winners for mailing addresses, and send along the goodies!

Do you has?*

Do you think you have what it takes to be a master distiller/blender?  Can you rack a days worth of whiskey single-handed after spending hours on the malt floor?  Do you have the fortitude to sample a hundred barrels and still make it to the pub for a dram and a pint?  If you can think you are (wo)man enough to handle all this and more, do I have a contest for you.

Bushmills has come up with possibly the best contest idea ever.  You can win 30 days at Bushmills distillery working along side Master Distiller Colum Egan.  All you have to do is enter here:  www.facebook.com/bushmills1608.  You will need to submit a statement and a video plea.  The top entrants will be narrowed down through online votes.  The winners of the first round will compete in a three day Bushcamp where they will be subjected to the “Master’s Challenge”.  The winner at Bushcamp will be crowned the global winner and spend 30 days at the distillery.

Good luck, readers!

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays

Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate. We hope you found some wonderful whiskey related libations under the tree. For those who don’t celebrate, happy holidays from the Apostles to all of you.

As a little something extra this holiday season we’ve got a contest for our loyal readers. Pernod Ricard was kind enough to send over a wonderful bar tending set to the Whisk(e)y Apostle offices. (See pictures) In the spirit of the season we’d like to pass this lovely gift on to one of you. To facilitate this we’ve come up with a little contest. All you need to do is be a registered user of Whisk(e)yApostle.com. That’s it. You can sign up here. We’ll pick a random user on January 25th as our winner and contact the winner for their mailing address.

We hope you’re all having a great holiday season. Now hurry up and register!

Contest news from The Balvenie:

Just in time for the holidays, The Balvenie is offering the chance to win a one-of-a-kind prize: An exclusive Scotch Whisky nosing and tasting kit. The good folks at The Balvenie also wanted me to remind you about this year’s addition to the 17 year old range, The Balvenie 17 Year Old Madeira Cask.  Richard and I sampled this at WhiskyFest this year.  It’s a good dram.  The nose is a little weak, but it packs a wallop on the palate (a reversal from last year’s Rum Cask).  I’m still waiting for a 17 year old that knocks me out like the Islay Cask, but this will tide me over until then.

The Balvenie website is also offering some new features in the member’s only “Warehouse 24” area.  They’ve added a “whisky shelf” for members to catalog their whisky collections and even create a wish list.  You can also make your shelf public so other Warehouse 24 members can view your extensive collection and benefit from your tasting insight.  In case you are wondering, it is not just for whiskies from the Balvenie.  There are over 20,000 users with a wide range of tastes and preferences.  I played with the features a little last night.  It’s fun and serviceable, but not as extensive as similar services that provide more of a social network feel like Connosr.  While you are surfing the net, you should try that one too.
