Atlanta used to be a damn near barren wasteland of whiskey. Fortunately, times they are a changin’. Here’s a list of some of our favorite watering holes in and around Atlanta:
Bourbon Bar is in the lobby of the Intercontinental Hotel in Buckhead. As you would expect, the spirit menu is bourbon heavy.
Tip: Try paring your bourbon with a selection from the Ham Bar across the lobby.
H. Harper Station
This has become an Atlanta cocktail institution. Given the cocktail focus it’s understandable that the whiskey selection is bourbon and rye heavy. While the selection isn’t as extensive as some others on our list, the cocktails more than make up for it.
Tip: Try the Bitter Southerner #1 made in honor of our favorite online story slingers.
Holeman & Finich Public House
This Atlanta cocktail institution now has Casey Teague as their whiskey buyer extrodinaire. Casey was one of the brains behind Mac McGee’s extensive selection.
Tip: It almost goes without saying but the 10 PM H&F Burgers are legendary.
Little Alley Steak
Another OTP gem convenient for the East Cobb and Roswell crowd.
Tip: They selection is wide and deep. Make sure you check the price on those pours before ordering. Geeking out about ordering a Eagle Rare 17 Year Old just to find out it’s $60 a pour when the bills comes ain’t cool.
Local three is just off I-75 in the western part of Buckhead. It was started by local food heroes Chris Hall, Todd Mussman, and Ryan Turner. The whiskey menu is heavily bourbon focused.
Tip: Their barrel aged whiskey cocktails (when available) are not to be missed!
Mac McGee Irish Pub – Decatur
This, the original Mac McGee location, has a large selection of whiskeys from all around the world. Located on the Decatur square, it’s within easy walking distant of many fine establishments.
Tip: Don’t let the “pub” name fool you, their food is top notch too!
The Porter is situated just off the main intersection in Little Five Points. They have an extensive and well rounded whiskey menu offering variety for many interests and palates.
Tip: The Salt and Vinegar Popcorn is RIDICULOUSLY good!
The Vortex – Midtown & Little Five Points
This was the original whiskey bar in Atlanta. Before the smoking laws changed I was frequent fixture sitting at the bar in Midtown exploring the extensive selection of whiskeys. Don’t let the menu link fool you, there’s more behind the bar than they have listed.
Tip: For many years these were consistently rated the best burgers in Atlanta. Give one a try.
You know that old, out of place building with the pillars just south of Little Five on the way to Fox Brother’s BBQ? Yeah, that’s Wrecking Bar. Stop in and whiskey up!
Tip: While the scotch selection is a bit limited, they do often have surprises like the Highland Park Loki.
