Shieldaig Highland Single Malt Whiskey

What the Retailer Says

Highlands, Scotland- From an island off of the Highland coast. This unique Single Malt brings the brine and smoke to a region known mostly for more delicate malts. Rich, complex and slowly matured. Best enjoyed straight up or with a cube or two of ice.

What Richard Says:

Nose: A hint of smoke with a more vegetal and briney backbone.
Palate: Dry, salty, and savory. It’s more than a little bland.
Finish: “Smooth” if you go for that kind of thing. Really it is uninspiring and leaves you with nothing to note.
Comments: This bottle (and Shieldaig brand) are bottled for Total Wine by Ian Macleod Distillers. This is typical of ultra low cost private label bottles. By that I mean unoffensive but unremarkable. If you need a super cheap scotch then this is probably as good as any other $18 bottle. But that doesn’t mean I would buy it.

Rating: Probably Pass

  1. Strange… I’d agree there is little bite to it. But I found it to be peaty, smokey, and very musky. The taste made me think of farms and such and I joked with wife thst sheep must have died in the bog to flavor it.. but I found it very injoyable but different. Maybe they have some inconsistencies in their process and I got a better Barrel?

  2. A bottle of 14 year old Shieldaig was given to me. I sampled it with a friend with whom I’ve tasted many single malts. We agreed it was quite good, if not excellent. Different from most.
The mild smokiness was wrapped in a caramel-like flavour, unexpected and pleasing, but not overpowering. Nice finish.

  3. I’ve only recently acquired a taste for single malt scotch. Glenlivet and Glenfiddich seemed fine for the money. Then Total wine recommend Shieldaig. WOW!!! Very smooth to the extent that I rather drink it straight on ice…no water no soda! Now, I’m wondering where to get it locally ( Nashville). Scotch brands are so numerous and it appears the Scots really take production of their brands very seriously. After this discovery, I can’t wait to try a few more brands. But for now, Shieldaig is my go to brand!

  4. I’ve never purchased a bottle of whiskey that I’ve seriously considered pouring down the sink.
But after one drink of Shieldaig, that’s where I’m at.

  5. this is an interesting scotch whiskey! I have just begun my journey with scotch whiskeys and this is a encouraging start. I was watching ” Men in kilts” on Showtime cable tv. They went to an island with 5 distileries in Scotland. Was so fun to watch! Went out and bought this one to try. Watch this show its fun!!!!
